    At midday on Rome’s traditional birthday, sunlight streams directly
    through the oculus, illuminating the entrance.

    Stepping in, the Emperor was bathed in celestial light.

    4. The 4,535-tonne concrete dome rests on an oculus ring, supported by
    eight vaults and piers.

    It’s the only ancient masonry dome that needs no reinforcement and,
    nearly two thousand years after it was built, remains the largest
    unreinforced concrete dome in the world.

    5. Its longevity owes much to Roman concrete.

    This concrete contains calcium carbonate lumps called "lime clasts,"
    once thought to be from poor mixing.

    Now, they’re known to provide "self-healing" by dissolving in water that seeps into cracks and recrystallizing to seal them.

    6. At the Pantheon, one of the world’s oldest working doors still swings
    open today.

    Cast in bronze around 115 AD and standing 7.5 meters tall, it’s so well balanced that just one person can open it with ease.

    Even its ancient lock still functions after nearly two millennia.

    9. The Pantheon Fountain, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, is a
    stunning marble masterpiece situated in Rome’s Piazza della Rotonda.

    Originally designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1575, the fountain was
    carved from marble by Leonardo Sormani.

    10. The oculus is a circular opening in the dome, flooding the space
    below with light and symbolizing a connection to the heavens.

    Throughout the day, light from the oculus sweeps across the space,
    creating a reverse sundial effect that marks time by light rather than
    shadow.

    11. The dome’s height and diameter are exactly the same: 43 meters (142 feet), creating a perfect sphere inside the building.

    Drone pilot Mauro Sciambi takes us inside, showing us what it’s like to
    fly inside the oculus.

    12. Michelangelo, the legendary architect of St. Peter's Basilica dome,
    was clearly inspired by the Pantheon.

    Though he rarely praised other structures, upon seeing the Pantheon for
    the first time, he famously described it as “angelic and not a human design.”

    13. For some time, the Pantheon bore two bell towers, nicknamed
    “donkey’s ears.”

    Added by Bernini, they clashed with the ancient design and were taken
    down in 1883.

    14. The oculus at the dome’s peak is uncovered, letting rainwater fall inside. The floor slopes about 30 centimeters (12 inches) with drains to
    manage runoff.

    During storms, an underground drainage system collects the rainwater below.

    15. The term Pantheon translates to "temple of all the gods."
