automated line call image, and the ball, as it was displayed in simulation, just *barely* touched the outside of the line, making it "in" by rule. Now again assuming the second image, on X, is valid, you could see that the tape had been swept by the lines
crew at some point, and this left a sort of "shadow" that's wider than the tape--maybe .5 inch (12-13mm). And the ball just barely touched *the swept mark* not the tape.It was as if the automated system was confused by the sweep mark, and thought it was
the tape, itself.Well, at least Zverev was very polite and respectful. The ball is out with clear margins and also I believe the system they are using (hawkeye) doesn't make judgement based on the marks of the ball or the shadows you mentioned. It's
calibrated before the match (or matches) and its decisions are based on computer simulation of the trajectory of the ball captured in the air by many cameras. They should have used the other system that really captures the image of the ball crossing the
lines. I forget the name of the other system. It's better for clay, cheaper and can't be questioned in these situations.-- ----Android NewsGroup Reader----

They should not have used it on clay at all.
Can we have some tradition left?
My reasoning is this. No system is perfect but the positives are that mistakes are uniform and everyone is treated equally, which creates acceptance and harmony. So on non clay surfaces the pros outweigh the cons.
But on clay is not so straightforward. Mistakes made by system are seen and doubts are strong after players see real marks. The cons outweigh the pros. So it shouldn't be used.
