B.B.C. BEGINNINGS.— In the early days of broadcasting B,B.C.
transmitting stations were opened in very queer places. The first
Cardiff transmitter was housed in an electricity sub-station; at
Newcastle the headquarters were originally in a cow shed and later in a
stable yard; while at Leeds the transmitting station was formerly a
Friends' Meeting House. The B.B.C. research building at Balham, in
London, was previously a convent.
