  • advert break lengths

    Is there some sort of quantisation of advert breaks, ie do they have to be
    in increments of eg 30 seconds, or can adverts be of any (reasonable)
    length providing appropriate payment has been made? Just trying to work out
    an ad skipping strategy.

    Well, I think they can be any length as sometimes I hear silence after them
    as if a caption is up, and at other times the original show restarts. Nominally, though I think most are pretty standard for the charging bands.
    I've noticed there are some special shorter versions of man, notably direct line with the woman saying this is very awkward, one where she says take
    this for the return trip and one where she does not. It does not seem to
    equate to a logical length when shorter, but of cours may have a silent bit
    I cannot hear.

    They appear to be in multiples of ten seconds. I have two skip
    buttons, one for a whole minute forward and one for ten seconds back,
    and I usually have to press the forward button four times, but
    occasionally have to press the minus ten button a few times as well. I
    assume the advertising slots are priced in ten second increments, or
    maybe that's the maximum resolution of the playout software.

    I'm not at all sure they are that tightly controlled. There are
    also the bumper, sponsor and programme promotions.

    Has anyone else noticed that some channels even manage to include
    a promo for the programme you are actually trying to watch, which
    tends to confuse when skipping. ;-(

    The silence between programme and adverts *may* be a caption with the programme's name. In "the olden days" it would say "End of Part One" and
    "Part Two", so you knew which break it was. Nowadays you just get the
    programme name (maybe with a short animated sequence) but it's rare to get a count of which break it is.
