A WOMAN from Rhyl who caused serious injury to a cyclist in a crash in the town earlier this year is to undertake unpaid work.

Louise Matthews, 39, of Ffordd Anwyl, was handed a 12-month community order, and a driving ban of the same length, at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court today (November 20).

She was found guilty of causing serious injury by careless/inconsiderate driving on November 14.

The court heard that, on February 8, Matthews was driving a Skoda vehicle on Prince Edward Avenue when she hit Martyn Jones, a cyclist.

Mr Jones later attended Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s emergency department, and had suffered swelling and fracturing to his right arm as a result of the crash.

Matthews also caused £197.97 of damage to the bike Mr Jones was riding.

In mitigation for Matthews, a single mother who is the main carer for her daughter, the court heard that she had no previous convictions and a good driving record.

An appeal against her conviction is due to be heard in the crown court at a later date.

Mr Jones is also making a claim on Matthews’ insurance for loss of earnings as a result of the crash.

District judge Gwyn Jones, presiding over the hearing, ordered Matthews to complete 160 hours of unpaid work as part of the community order.

She will pay £197.97 in compensation to Mr Jones, and £775 in costs.

He told her: “The fact that you are appealing (the conviction) does not prevent you from completing any aspect of the community order.”
