A MOTORIST has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 after a car narrowly avoided a cyclist during a 'dangerous overtake' in Thornbury.

The motorist has also been penalised for failing to give information to police after a hearing at Bath Magistrates' Court on Thursday, April 27.

The prosecution came after the cyclist involved uploaded footage to the Avon and Somerset Police website of the incident in Alveston Hill, Thornbury, at 3pm on December 3 last year.

The video shows an incident in which a car is seen overtaking a cyclist with the driver pulling in sharply to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset’s Police said: “The owner of this vehicle failed to provide details for the driver involved in this dangerous overtake near Thornbury.

“Not only did the driver threaten the safety of the cyclist, they also narrowly avoided a high speed head on collision.”

“On review by a supervisor at the Central Ticket Office, the registered keeper was sent a notice of intended prosecution and request for the details of the driver.

“The registered keeper failed to respond, leading to their prosecution for failing to supply driver details.”

The defendant was fined £660 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £264 and £110 costs - bringing the total to £1,034.

Their driving licence was also endorsed with six penalty points.
