It will work vertically and will still be omnidirectional . In terms of performance however they only have a fraction of a dB over a smaller
    and cheaper halo.

I think you're right. There's a bit of cancellation between the 3 bits
A horizontal big wheel has a deep null up and down in free space . A
halo has a much less deep null. So if you turn both through 90 degrees,
the null is horizontal - not so bad with the halo, so both are not omnidirectional, with the halo winning . A further complication is the
height above ground . If you are unlucky most of the radiation goes
    "up".

I don't think big wheels are meant to be used vertically.

What was he trying to do ? . I'll need to try the videos on another
browser. I'll mess around with the big wheel model,

I got the videos to run. The first one was doubly slow.

IIRC, a 'simple' horizontal halo spews RF (with some degree of equality)
in all directions - not just horizontally (which is usually what you
want), but also up and down. Some time ago, someone sent me an RF field diagram, but I can't find it at short notice.

    Here's what I get.
    http://www.b-howie.co.uk/halo.png

The big wheel is more omnidirectional than the halo. I've seen places
where the halo is vertical and more uniform, but there's more up an
down as you say and less to the side.

I still can't get 3dB over a dipole for a big wheel unless I add in
ground gain, but then the dipole also has ground gain

    http://www.b-howie.co.uk/bigwheel_5m_agl.png http://www.b-howie.co.uk/halo_5m_agl.png

I'd been looking at using a bigwheel on 6m at home, attracted by the
claimed 3dbD gain , but ended up using a delta loop for the few times I
    use the band.
