killed long distance 2m contacts for decades in the UK.

I built an ssb phasing exciter in 1972 and used it on 2m . It could run
AM, Phase Modulation and USB/LSB. It worked well .

Plenty of 2m SSB about in the 70s and 80s, only stopped for me when I
moved into a river valley.
