If a person is tried for various charges of different severities, is
there any rule which says that they must either reach verdicts on all
the charges or else none of them?

Suppose the evidence for the most serious charges is ambiguous and after
many hours of deliberation the jury is still split and cannot reach a
unanimous or majority verdict of either guilty or not guilty. But
suppose (and I'm speculating, because no information has yet been
released about the case that I'm thinking of, which I won't name!) the
jury *had* reached verdicts on the lesser charges: would they be allowed
    to return verdicts on those?

If a retrial is ordered, can the CPS choose to pursue some of the
charges on which a conviction is more likely, and not to pursue the more serious one which may (I'm speculating!) have been the sticking-point?

The judge will instruct the jury on how to proceed.
