    I use either the domestic Gas hob (if no-one is in...) or a soldering
    gun. Depends a bit on the thickness of the braid.

    Buy the boss a Creme Brulee torch. You know she needs one:-) Also handy
    for firework ignition on a windy Nov. 5th.

    Oven/hob gas lighter, as sold in Tesco and similar stores. I can vouch
    for them being useful with heat-shrink wrapping.

    Portasol? A portable, gas powered soldering iron. The have various tips, including one perfect for cutting/sealing nylon cord.

    As a moderate smoker on 40 a day I find that a windproof cigarette
    lighter from the local corner shop is fine for such things.

    That sounds more like the wimpy yellow flame cheapies rather than the blue flame rockets that would be more suit the O/P's 'windproof' requirements. I
    buy those whenever I can find them but sadly can't remember where I last
    got them, possibly Lidl/Aldi but not in current stock.
