• OT - not for cleaning gutters...

From Jeff Layman@21:1/5 to All on Tue Apr 1 13:48:02 2025
At the supermarket this morning quite a bit of the car park was fenced
off. The biggest mobile tower crane in the world* arrived after a few
minutes and when set up was quite a sight to see, with a height of 40m
and a jib extending to 60m.

Apologies for the second photo, as it was not possible to get it all in
without holding the phone at an odd angle!

    <https://ibb.co/nNMS8c7C>

Info on the crane here: <https://cms.pm/uploads/files/dmcranes.co.uk_--_221488445.pdf>

The vehicle itself is over 16m long, 4m high, and 3m wide, with six
axles (at least 5 move for steering), and weighing in at 72 tonnes! I
    assume it requires an escort.

When they recently cordoned off some of the parking bays at our Tesco
and erected dome steel structures I thought it was additional EV
charging, but no, what they did was move the click & collect from the
cabin at the back of the store and use delivery vehicles in the
    car-park instead.

There was a mobile crane parked nearby, and I think it's still there,
perhaps in your case that "Frankencrane" was all the hire company had
    left. after all, #EveryLittleHelps

Possibly, but that sort of crane costs around £3000 a day to hire. So
unless they were willing to take a loss I doubt they'd hire it out at
    less than usual charge.

That is a serious bit of kit. I bet it's fun driving it round a
    roundabout.
My company once used what was said then to be the biggest mobile crane
in Mexico, but it wasn't this size. The one we used plucked its
counterweights off of a truck, and put them onto its own back. Once it
was all assembled, the driver set it at full elevation, about 75-80 deg.
from horizontal, put it into 'Extend' mode at full throttle, and got out
of the cab and lit a cigarette. He had finished smoking it by the time
the crane had finished extending its jib. I asked my American colleague
if he had ever used one like it, and he said that he hadn't, but he
hoped we didn't snag any passing aircraft on their way to Mexico City
    Airport.

I was once following a white van, with a long ladder on its roof. It
stopped at a T-junction, and when it moved off, it started to turn
the corner, but the front section of the ladder got caught against a
lamp-post on the far side. He was stuck, blocking the whole
junction, could not go forward, traffic did not let him go backward. I
turned round and left him to it.
