• Jelly crimps and correct tool

From Andrew@21:1/5 to All on Wed Feb 19 18:44:50 2025
OR droid made up a flying lead to connect my new BT SH2
router to my extension wiring using jelly crimps, but
my extension wiring uses CAT5E solid cable and the flying
    lead is stranded.

PAge 15 of the TLC catalogue shows GP JC2C 2 core crimps
for use with *solid* core phone cable, so presumably not
really suitable for stranded or joining solid to stranded.

I might change this to a soldered connection which may or
may not reinstate the previously working upstairs extension
(ancient BT Relate 100 phone) to ringing correctly.

I pinched a handful of his crimps for my own use but it
looks like a special pair of pliars is needed, which I
don't have. Is there a suitable fudge alternative. I have
a collection of needle nosed and other types of pliars.

I've always just used a pair of grips, like these, never had a problem,
(with the lifetime total of less than Qty 25)

I think they're designed for use in parallel smooth jaw pliers, e.g.

But it's not worth buying any specially, just be gentle with some other
    pliers ...

IME they will work fine on both. They are IDC terminals and those are
commonly used in crimp on plugs like RJ45 or the BT style phone plug.

The proper tool is a small pair of smooth jaw pliers with a gap machined
in the end so that you can crimp too far. However normal pliers used in
non gorilla mode will be fine (or for that matter even strong thumb
pressure works as well I find)

    Ok, thanks. I'll experiment.

Up to you, but if it were me I'd put a proper RJ11 (or RJ45) socket on the
wall and then an off the shelf cable to the router. That way you aren't dependent on any bodge wiring and use proper punchdown terminations.

Bit surprised by lack of ringing as I don't see how it would work but not
ring. Maybe it needs the bell wire connecting not just the voice pair? Or a ring capacitor to regenerate the bell wire from the pair. The router will
have that, but if it only has 2 wires connected that might cause ring
    failure.

That is exactly how I had originally done it !. I had a *data* extension
from the NTE5 master socket, through a microfilter crimped to the brown
pair of CAT5E which fed the centre 2 pins of a CAT5E socket with the
modem cable (uses only the 2 centre pins). Immediately next to this
CAT5E outlet I had fitted a blank 25mm back box for the phone extension
    that you refer to.

OR Droid just removed my NTE5E master, crimped the incoming A+B (orange
and white) to the blue/white pair of said CAT5E and put a new NTE5C
outlet into the empty back box which I has intended for a phone
extension. Then he made up his flylead terminating in another CAT5E
pair behind the new NTE5C faceplate and hacked about with my original
extension wiring next to the original BT master socket.

None of this was necessary. He could have just used the existing CAT5E
outlet as I had installed it and simply jelly crimped the original
A+B wires directly onto my brown/white 'data' extension. This would
have taken him less than 15 minutes. He actually spent best part of
    2+ hours faffing about.
