• MDPE fittings - seem to have become very expensive

From Chris Green@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jan 14 09:38:06 2025
I've just had to do some (quite minor) running repairs on our outdoor
MDPE pipework that supplies the waterers in our fields.

Prices for even very simple MPPE accessories seem to have gone up a
    huge amount.

    For example this:-

    https://www.toolstation.com/mdpe-wall-plate-elbow/p90570

I have found some lower prices but the bulk of things at both Screwfix
and Toolstation seem to be much higher than they used to be and also
seem very expensive for relatively simple things. As I said I have
found things a bit cheaper from some eBay and Amazon sellers but
everywhere seems expensive for MDPE fittings.

Has some componenent part got very expensive or is some sort of
plastic involved very expensive, or what?

The financial policies of the government are pushing up interest rates via
the (falling) pricing of long-term bonds, which in turn has led to the £ falling in value to a two-year low. The introduction of increases in NI and
MLW in April are causing serious rethinking among SMEs. Buy now, things
    will only get more expensive?

Brexit, oil prices, global inflation, the UK economy, utilities prices
are all factors. As well as 20mm MDPE not being a common size.

Yes, but other (plumbing and similar) things don't seem to have
rocketed in price quite so much.

    BES to the rescue again?

Generally a lot cheaper across the MDPE range, obvs plus post & VAT:

    https://www.bes.co.uk/pipe-tube-fittings/pipe-fittings/mdpe/

    https://www.bes.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=mdpe+wallplate

Although be sure to search for "wallplate" and not "wall plate" or you'll
    only get these<ouch>:

Yes, weird isn't it, those prices for the brass and blue plastic ones
    are crazy!

If I wanted brass for strength I'd prob go for an off the shelf brass
wallplate (both ends bsp if avail) and use one of BES's MDPE to bsp
transition connectors to make the connection. Sadly think the wall plate
would need stood off the wall to gain clearance for the MDPE transition fitting.
