• Mac name changed with 12.6.1 update

From Chris@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 24 08:44:41 2022
    Anyone else experienced this?

In Air Drop my Mac used to come with the laptop's name, but now it comes
up as it's serial number. Isn't the serial number a bit sensitive that
    should be broadcast widely?

This has happened since I updated to 12.6.1, although I can't say it's
the direct cause. How can I change the airdrop name back to what it was?

Not really sensitive, its only practical use is to check on whether
    you're in warranty AFAIK

Try changing the name in Sysprefs/Networking to something else then
back? It's supposed to follow that.

    Cheers - Jaimie

The only reference to a name I can see is under WINS, which uses the
previous name. Am on Monterey BTW.

I tried changing it in Sysprefs/Sharing - as per a google hit - but it's
greyed out and can't be changed. Even with the padlock unlocked.

    Anywhere else I could look?

The names can all be get/set using scutil in Terminal.

    scutil --get HostName
    scutil --get LocalHostName
    scutil --get ComputerName

    scutil --set HostName newname
    scutil --set LocalHostName newname
    scutil --set ComputerName newname

Sorry - brain glitch on my part.

That's the one. It has an edit button, IIRC? Very odd UI.

I guess partly or even mostly that BSD underpins macOS, there’s no /etc/hostname file to edit?

I expect so, BSD is all 'hostname' in rc.conf. But for macOS, Chris'
scutil commands are the appropriate interface to change it.
