From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Tue Nov 1 22:57:01 2022
Long story short: New (old - same 2012) host identified & purchased for
cheap. SSD & RAM swapped in. Booted up and... phew! Fingers crossed,
    all seems ok.

New purchase was a nice clean machine (hardshell and keyboard cover
used) with a clean install of Mountain Lion. Quite sprightly! According
to the battery 'time remaining' (where did that go?) it'll last for 7
    hours... we'll see.

When I booted my old machine this eve, it behaved for about 1/2 an
hour... thought it was all for nothing, but then it started glitching
    again.

    Onwards!

I think they can take Catalina but only if you really want to.

    Oh dear :(

    Onwards!

    To the tip? (Only joking)

Yes... I'm feeling a bit left behind. I keep meaning to make the 64bit
jump but have several 32bit apps. I probably don't use many of them
    though!

    Probably!
