from the lock screen, tap & hold, then tap customize, where you can
then change the font, colour, add widgets and even create multiple lock screens (which can auto-rotate based on focus modes).

Yes. It works on the iPhone, but not on the iPad,
This is iPad OS 16.1 and not iOS 16.1

Should also note that even on the phone you can’t get them back to as slim as they were before. I seriously dislike it.

I was able to change it to the old style on my iPhone.
But I agree: It is a toy feature and has absolutely no added value.
I'm obviously missing something but what is the advantage of multiple
lock screens?

rubbish. multiple custom lock screens are one of the most useful
features of ios 16 and a major reason to upgrade. already many apps are adding widget support.

It's Apple finally catching-up with the "profiles" that Nokia offered
20-odd years ago. So you can have a work lock-screen (with work related widgets) and a home lock-screen (with home-related widgets), for example.
Perhaps in another 20 years they'll offer an "outdoor mode" and I'll
finally be able to hear the phone ring when it's in a coat pocket!

the same reason why there are different watch faces and desktop
wallpapers: variety and/or different purposes.
each lock screen can have a different background photo and a mix of
widgets specific for whatever you're currently doing. for example, you
could have weather and activity for when you're exercising, another
with work related info (such as your next appointment) for when you're supposedly working. a few of the wallpapers are dynamic, such as the
weather which changes with the weather.also, background photos can be auto-rotated for variety. or it can be boring with just one lock
screen.

via the new secret iphone mind meld.
another way is by setting up focus modes for an appropriate lock
screen, such as work, sleep, etc.
And which widgets are available from the lock screen?
apple has the usual bunch, including weather, calendar, reminders,
world clock, fitness, battery (including watch & airpods), news, etc.
third party app developers have many more.
I don't get those
till I unlock the phone.
it's set up beforehand.

Those I get by swiping left off the app screen, or whtever it is called.

Can't work out how, as soon as I try to do something the phone unlocks.

yep, and now they can be on the lock screen.
it's *really* useful with the iphone 14 pro and always-on display.

set it up after unlocking, to be ready next time it's locked.

apple watch will tap your wrist, and depending on the watch and
carrier, the phone can be at home.

OK, swiped down from the Home screen, get the Lock screen, long press on
the display, nothing happens! Though again I can swipe sideways to get
the widgets. Perhaps it doesn't work on an SE.
Toys. I just added battery charging level to the lock screen because
Apple is incapable of reintroducing it on the iPhone 11's status bar.

not only are they capable, but they actually did add it back.

are you running ios 16?
if so, unlock via touch id but *don't* press the home button, so that
you remain on the lock screen, then touch&hold.
alternately, go to settings>wallpaper.

Unreadable without magnifying glass for people over 25 and therefore
useless.

it should stay awake long enough to touch&hold the display after
unlocking.

Stick a finger on it and nothing happens till the display times out.
FWIW I seem to be able do get it working on my iPhone 11 but I'm not
going to make any changes just yet. Better the devil you know ;)

face id.
