• Use 2 iPhones

From RJH@21:1/5 to All on Fri Oct 28 11:01:46 2022
I've got an iPhone XS (erased, 256GB) I'd use as second device so that I can use certain apps on it - mainly things like music, photos and navigation. The sim card would stay on my current phone - a 128GB 12 Mini.

What's the best way to go about this? I merrily went along with setting up the XS until I got to a 'click to set up your new phone' screen. That could
suggest that it's goign to be my only phone. So I abandonned the install. Searching seems to suggest setting the XS up as part of a family, with the 12 mini as the parent. I suppose I could do that but it doesn't feel right.

Any guidance on the best way forward?

set it up without a sim. it will say activation failed, which you can
    ignore.

    Has this changed?

only slightly, there is now a dismiss button to support esims because
the phone has to be functional so that it can scan an esim qr code (or
    have the info manually added).

if the user never gets around to activating service, the phone will
simply show 'sos' in the status bar, since the only thing it can do is
    make emergency calls.

The last time I tried to setup an iPhone without a sim
(a few years ago with an 8 Plus) I could not complete the setup.

i've been doing it with many different iphones as far back as the
original, a couple of which have bad esn/imei (good enough for
    testing).

there is a difference if the phone has never been activated versus
previously activated and having been reset.

there is also a difference with setting it up on the device itself
    versus using itunes.

as you mentioned, using a dead sim can also work.

    Thanks. Good to know.

As always, you are a fountain of information. Regardless of what The

Has this changed? The last time I tried to setup an iPhone without a sim
(a few years ago with an 8 Plus) I could not complete the setup. So I
picked up a deactivated sim card on eBay for a couple dollars and then it completed.

Once it completes you can then remove the sim card, but it was absolutely required to have a sim card - even a dead one - to setup the phone and then
use the phone as a wi-fi device.

It doesn't care whether it's your only device or your 100th. Carry on as a
new device without restoring a back up. Then log in as your usual Apple
user and that should be it.

    So I abandonned the install.

Family is combining/sharing multiple users not multiple devices.

The questions now are do you want photos *only* on the XS or *also* in the
12? Will you be taking more photos with the 12? If you will do you want
them to be added to the library on the XS?

Good, I think - so set it up using my current (only) Apple ID, without restoring a backup?

I'd like t share things like photos, settings, contacts etc. between the 2 phones if possible.

restoring the backup is not required, but if you want all of the
previous content, it might be worthwhile.

    very possible.

Aye. Just think of the 2nd phone as a very small iPad, if you want to
modify your mental model of how things work.

The questions now are do you want photos *only* on the XS or *also* in the

If you don't already: I would *very* much recommend subbing to iCloud at
an appropriate tier in order to use the iCloud Photo Library, and
setting the XS to "Download and keep originals" in Settings/Photos. The
12 Mini you can leave it on "Optimize (sic) iPhone storage", and it'll
use thumbnails and cache-recent/download-on-demand for pics. This will
give you a full copy of your pics on the XS, access to your full library
on the 12, and the ability to take pics with either of them and they'll
    sync.

    Cheers - Jaimie

Thanks - seems to be working fine. Nagging to 'set up the mobile service' though, so set it to airplane mode with wifi on.
