• Wireless charging an iPhone11?

    From T i m@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 11 10:29:13 2022
So, still trying to prep a stand-alone comms solution for Mum now she's
living with my Luddite in-laws and am slowly ticking the boxes re the
    phone itself.

I did get one of the flap round wallet type cases from the local market
but have a "Spigen Ultra Hybrid" case on it's way from Amazon today and
with that in mind, can anyone comment on the practicality of Wireless
    charging on this phone please?

For background, I have been using wireless charging on my SGS7 and a
genuine Samsung puck type horizontal wireless charger with just a slow
charger (to not cook the battery) and the only thing with that is you
have to make sure it's on there reasonably centrally. Not something I
would want to risk Mum getting right every time (she's still pretty
sharp mind) as it's easy to get wrong and you can end up going out for
the day with an uncharged phone. ;-(

Daughter has a SGS8 and one of the more upright charging docks and she
uses that all the time and because it sits in it, is more predictable.

I know the iPhone 11 charges on the Samsung wireless charger so I was
just interested in any thoughts and experiences re wireless chargers for
that generation of iPhone and if you have any recommendations re
    charging stands etc?

eg, Is there a particular minimum spec or standard I need to look out
for to placate Apple devices particularly or any makes / models to
specifically avoid because then can cause damage to the phone or be a
fire risk etc (outside of not buying a cheap one from the market etc).

    Cheers, T i m

anything qi should work. stick with name brands, avoid the noname stuff.

the iphone 12 (and later) have magnets to auto-align the charger, known
as magsafe. there are magnetic add-ons to add that to older iphones and
    android phones.

    Noted.

I was considering these the Anker PowerWave from Amazon (probably a
pair) and just using some generic / quality chargers as I don't think we
need 'fast' as I'm not sure that does the batteries any good (mainly
because of heat). There are a fair few reviews on Amazon and the vast
    majority, positive.

Magsafe is one of the things I really liked with the Apple Laptops but I
don't think they don't offer that now?

    android phones.

My concern with anything magnetic like that is it can make stuff
'sticky' (well, it's called magnetism <g>), eg, unless the base is
sufficiently heavy, you can pull the base over trying to unmagnet
things, the charging pad comes away with the phone?

    anker is good stuff.

they do, after a few years of not doing so.

unlike magsafe on iphones, magsafe on macbooks is a direct wired
connection held by magnets, whereas with iphones, it's qi wireless,
with magnets used to align it (plus rfid to communicate a little extra
    info).

some pads are heavy enough so that doesn't happen, or attached to
    something, such as a vehicle.

the apple magsafe charger is just a puck, and unless it's glued or
otherwise affixed to the table, will lift with the phone. that can be
good, as you could wirelessly charge and still use the phone, just as
if it was connected with a cable. the problem is apple's magsafe
charger cable is too short for that to actually be practical.

If it's USB powered I guess you could extend that end?

usb extension cables aren't certified either, but they mostly work for
    just charging,

third parties make a charger puck with a longer cable.

Yeah, I've seen adverts for them on Amazon etc.

    Ok.

    or attached to

I might be looking at the likes of a Quadlock mount / case systems for
    my SGS7 but that's another story. ;-)

    They look neat.

the apple magsafe charger is just a puck, and unless it's glued or
otherwise affixed to the table, will lift with the phone.

For me part of the 'advantage' of having wireless charging is the
convenience of just being able to pick the phone up or put it down (and
back on charge) one handed. Beer / tea in one hand then I can grab the
phone with the other and leave the room to take a call so I don't
disturb the Mrs watching TV etc.

    that can be
good, as you could wirelessly charge and still use the phone, just as
if it was connected with a cable.

In the case of my SGS7 I can do that in any case by taking the lead out
of the puck and putting it straight in the phone, not that I do that
    very often.

    the problem is apple's magsafe
charger cable is too short for that to actually be practical.

FWIW, I got a magnetic charger from Lidl for £10 about 2 weeks ago. They may be there still - but if not expect another in the next few months. It was marked for 11 and 12, and works perfectly with my 12 mini in an Apple leather case. Tethered to a clock radio's USB (with a C to USB converter) it charges fully in a few hours.

In terms of build, not inspiring, I'd go functional - a plastic puck maybe 6cm diameter, with a foldable stand on the back. The magnet is very effective - phone snaps into position effortlessly. Much better than another non-magnetic Lidl it replaces, which has hit and miss. And the magnet holds the phone very firmly - it could easily mount vertically in, say, a car. I've no idea where the stand comes in - only purpose I can see is to use it as a grip if needed
    to separate phone from charger.

For province/compatibility I've always found Lidl/Aldi cables and chargers to be durable and compatible.

That sounds very similar to the one I bought from Poundland (for 3 or 4 quid)the other day. I'be popped it open and it consists of a flat plate
coil and a small PCB and seems to charge the iPhone11 and my SGS7 ok (as
in it charges them, I have no idea how well or safely etc).

I was wondering if I could use on of those in a 3D printed stand and
whilst I'm sure it would work, I still have the question re 'how well /
    safely' etc.

The magnet is very effective -
    phone snaps into position effortlessly.

I'll have a look in our Lidl when I get the all clear on this Covid. (We
have been pretty conscientious over the last two+ years but could have
got it when we let our guard down having a quick meal and drink with a international visitor / friend the other day). ;-(

    Much better than another non-magnetic
Lidl it replaces, which has hit and miss.

The non-magnetic Samusung puck can be 'hit and miss' if you aren't
reasonably considerate of placing the phone on it centrally.

And the magnet holds the phone very
firmly - it could easily mount vertically in, say, a car.

That is of interest as I don't have a car mount (well, I do, the Mrs)
but was thinking of something (for the SGS7).

    I've no idea where
the stand comes in - only purpose I can see is to use it as a grip if needed to separate phone from charger.

Oh, I was thinking the charger puck sat in the mount?

For province/compatibility I've always found Lidl/Aldi cables and chargers to be durable and compatible.

Yeah, I have found most of their electrical stuff to be reasonably
serviceable and I started my Home Automation project from one of Lidls
    starter kits. ;-)

I have since bought NOS of their Zigbee smart sockets (Silverline =
re-badged Tuya I think) from eBay for a bit more than I could in-store
at the time, had I not bought all their stock ... ;-)

FWIW, I got a magnetic charger from Lidl for £10 about 2 weeks ago. They may
be there still - but if not expect another in the next few months. It was >>>> marked for 11 and 12, and works perfectly with my 12 mini in an Apple leather
    case.

I felt you had to go to the 12 before you got the magnetic experience
for some reason but that's good to know.

I’ve got a couple off 7Dayshop.com, couldn’t tell you the brand, but it was
something like £8 for a box of two.

Thanks Andy. I can only see the flat pads on there atm?

They actually work fine on my iPhone 8, and the Wife’s SE (Gen 2).

    Cool.

I’m guessing you missed my follow up post, I wasn’t sure whether the magnetic thing was significant, or if it was actually all about wireless charging. Sometimes misnomers get used for generic terminology.

In any case, I can confirm those two phones work with wireless charging
    ;-).

    Cheers.

Actually, I didn't Andy, I tried to reply to it twice but it wouldn't
send (then vanished) after trying (saving it as a draft) several times.

So I gave up and just replied to the first one. ;-(

    I wasn’t sure whether the
magnetic thing was significant, or if it was actually all about wireless charging.

My origional question was really just re Mums iPhone 11 and wireless
charging in general, given the guy who supplied us with the iPhone (who
repairs phones for a living) suggested he didn't really get on with
    wireless charging?

Given daughter and I had nearly exclusively used wireless charging on
our Samsungs with no unexplained issues for a few years now, I thought
I'd ask about the practicality re iPhones here.

Sometimes misnomers get used for generic terminology.

Understood. Whilst magnetic charging might make the location of the
phone on the base more predictable for Mum, I'm not sure the other
effects (the puck sticking to the phone when you pick it up say) might
incur other risks not present with a non-magnetic charging solution,
like it ripping the phone out of her hand if she forgets it's still
tethered (depending on the strength of the magnetic coupling etc).

In any case, I can confirm those two phones work with wireless charging
    ;-).

    That's cool. ;-)

    Cheers, T i m

OK, fair enough. It’s been fine here. The only issue I found was
positioning of the phone on the pad, but generally it’s worked fine.

Given daughter and I had nearly exclusively used wireless charging on
our Samsungs with no unexplained issues for a few years now, I thought

Been no problem here either, other than the mentioned positioning matter. I suspect that’s as much to do with the design/quality of the pad as it is
the phone though. I mean, they’re all oblong devices of similar shape, that seem to pick up charging in a similar way.

The one’s I got are just a round flat pad, I simply drop the phone onto it, face up, and it charges. There’s no resistance when picking it up. They
seem to work fine. Even with the cases fitted.

In any case, I can confirm those two phones work with wireless charging
    ;-).

It’s a useful feature, as you say, perhaps ‘cool’, but not essential, IMHO.

FWIW, I believe you only need to know if the back of the phone is glass,
these are all wireless charging capable.
