• M2 Mini?

From Graeme Wall@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 24 10:28:46 2022
I've heard rumours that Apple will release an M2 mini later this year,
    is this likely?

Looking at replacing my iMac with a mini+ studio display.

very likely, but there are no guarantees.

Debating whether to wait or just go for it!

do you *need* it now or can you wait? there will always be something
better to be released, but you can't wait forever.

the m2 is definitely faster, but based on the m1/m2 macbook air and
macbook pro, the difference is not that much. it's also possible there
could be an m2 pro chip in a high end mac mini, which would be quite a
bit faster. it's also possible the mini itself may be redesigned with a
new enclosure and/or offer features not available on the existing m1
    mini.

My current 2012 27" iMac is showing its age, I've been hanging on in the
hope they would bring out a new version, like the smaller screen model
but it looks like that isn't going to happen.

So not a lot of advantage in waiting too long then.

that is definitely old, but if it does what you need, then you can
probably wait. showing its age is different than cannot do what you
    need to do.

there might be additional imacs, but that is more likely to be early
next year than the next few months.

the only mac that is guaranteed to be announced is the apple silicon
mac pro. most people expected it at wwdc, but that did not happen.
apple said a 2 year transition and it's been 2 years.

the mac mini is likely to be updated to an m2, but there are no
guarantees. note that there is still an intel mac mini still being
sold, which is very likely to be discontinued to fully complete the
transition, and something is going to need to replace it.

there are also the global supply chain issues, which can (and already
    has) caused delays.

If you're upgrading things like memory I'd take a (quick!) look at the Studio. It almost makes something approaching sense for me, and of course there's the front mounted I/O ports . . .
