So that explains why /home is empty and /net doesn’t exist on my Mac.

you mean /home and /net (note the *forward* slash):

    <https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/295679/creating-a-directory-i n-home-on-macos-sierra>
IIRC /home and /net can be used by directory services like AD or OD.
They are mount points created by the auto_master file. Usually they
are not used for anything - especially on non-corporate Macs.

maybe not. none of my macs are corporate, yet almost all of them have
    both.

/home and /net (with forward slash) is what I wrote in the title of this thread. Perhaps you need new glasses.

Why do you, indeed why does anyone, need more than /one/ Apple Mac computer?

A laptop when travelling perhaps? I use an iPad Pro for that.

Guess why! At home I use a large MBP and for traveling a MBAir. They are
kept synchronised and important data is stored remote and accessible
from anywhere. Even for my Linux machines.

iPads are toys but certainly not a serious computing device. I use mine
less and less. The way I use computer there is no reasonable use case.

I guess I could use my Apple laptops as MacBookends?

Looks like someone is trying to hijack another thread :-(

If there any connection then with /home being the base for user accounts in other Unix like systems?

Extremely stylish but a bit antique.

They're part of autofs/automount, which mounts directories on demand
from an NFS server. NFS and autofs/automount has outlasted their inventors..

/net is a way to explore all the available mounts from all responding
NFS servers, and is quite a handy tool in those environments.

Look at /etc/auto* for the config.
