• Old Mac

From Graham J@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 4 19:43:40 2022
My neighbour died of old age last summer, leaving several computers.
I've been asked to help dispose of them.

One is a PowerMac G4, bought sometime around 1995. RAM has been
upgraded from 128Mbyte to 768Mbyte (in around April 2002). Installed OS
is 9.2 (Z1-9.2.1). Machine has been very little used; and is in very
    clean condition.

Is there a market for something as old as this?

Clearly I should erase the disk before selling it or giving it away; but
how would a new owner install an operating system on it?

the powermac g4 was first introduced in 1999, so either the date is
    wrong or it's not a g4.

not really, although there might be someone who collects older macs.

check completed ebay auctions for a rough idea of what people are
    paying.

    Clearly I should erase the disk before selling it or giving it away;

the best option is to remove it, and on those computers, it's very easy.

    but
how would a new owner install an operating system on it?

ideally, the previous owner kept the install discs that came with the
computer, which should be included in any sale.

otherwise, the next owner would need to buy a retail copy from ebay or elsewhere.

Interesting. The file system says it was created 4 April 1995. Perhaps
that was the date on the original OS installation disk.

how are you determining that date?

    Label clealy says:

    Power Mac G4
    Model number: = M5183
    Serial number: = CK123H2YL8z

a serial number lookup reveals all:

    Serial Number: CK123H2YL8Z
Model: Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) (CTO)
Build Country: This unit was built in Cork, Ireland.
Build Year: This unit was built in 2001.
Build Week: This unit was built in week 23 of that year (June).
Production Nr.: This unit was number 1256 to be built that week.
    ...
    Speed: 466 MHz
    ...
The original OS for this device is 9.1 Classic and/or 10.0.3
The maximum OS for this device is 10.4.11 Tiger.

week 23, 2001 means that it's 21 years old this week!

ideally, the previous owner kept the install discs that came with the computer, which should be included in any sale.

Undoubtedly the previous owner did keep the disks, until he died. But whether his children did so, or have now thrown them all out ...?

    maybe they didn't.

The 1995 date could be explained if the late owner transplanted the
drive from some even older Mac and didn't reformat the disk. That's
    quite an old disk ;-)

    The disk is:

    IBM Deskstar
    Made in Thailand May 2001
    Apple HDD Firmware

... so it's likely that this was installed at the time of manufacture of
    the G4 manufacture by Apple.

1 January 1904 is the epoch start for classic Mac OS, so somehow that
file got a timestamp of 0.

Look up sold listings on ebay. Quite a range depending on the extra details and accessories. The G4 cube is pricey (£200-400 territory), the G4 tower less so. Seems like the auction listings can be a bit hit and miss,
although many are 'parts only' which suggests there was something wrong with the machine.

Be careful about erasing the disk as it may not be straightforward to do a reinstall without media, especially if there are apps to keep. I'm
not sure if there's a way to wipe the personal data while keeping the
    OS and apps.

One way you could do is to delete all the personal files, then
create files full of junk (zeroes or random data) until the disk is full.
Then delete the junk files. That will overwrite any personal data from the deleted files while keeping the remaining contents of the disc.

I see eBay has several similar machines at prices starting at £50, but

mostly because it doesn't support the latest web standards.

browsers that will work with such an early OS?

they'll work in the sense that they'll launch, however, they won't be
able to render most sites, essentially the same as ie5.

    If I install OS 9.1 could I then upgrade it on-line to 10.4.11 ???

not for free, and it's not an upgrade, but rather a separate install.

the browser issue will still exist, although it will be slightly better
and render more sites. overall, it will also be quite a bit slower than
    macos 9.

make sure it's a *retail* copy, which will install on any supported

They may be useful for driving obsolete (but expensive) machinery,

is to throw everything away and start all over,

Not sure about the legality of 'borrowing' not that anyone would care.

Yes I had that, I think on my G4 500Mhz tower which I think was called giga-byte ethernet as a feature
that made it stand out around 1998-99 .

I was playing starcraft on mine last night for a while running OS9.2 something wrong with the patritions I have with
OS X on them finder keeps crashing , I get a memory error while booting up in OS 9 bit I ignore it
and it doesn;t seem to effect OS( think I have about 758MB too)

I see eBay has several similar machines at prices starting at £50, but nobody seems to be bidding. Is there actually any use for such an old machine?

I thought about putting some sheets of foam inside and using it as a cat bed. Or maybe a drinks cabinet but it wouldn;t hold much.
I just really liked the design and look , the way it opens up.
Thought about putting some LEDs behind the apple logo , sort of table lamp idea.
But it's of little use for anything now.
Not sure why I'm keeping it but it has a 100Mb ZIP drive and a DVD drive
so you never know maybe one day I'll need one of them.
But I also have a G3 300MHz tower in the loft too.
G3 CRT iMac a LC475 and a few others I've collected, none are of any real use. Such a pity they all seemed such good machines in their day.

but I think they'd cost more in P&P than they are worth.

You should be able to purchase Tiger Install media on eBay etc. Sadly I >>> discarded mine years ago :(

make sure it's a *retail* copy, which will install on any supported
hardware, and not a machine-specific copy that was included with the
mac, which won't install on different macs.

Got a Tiger 10.4 install DVD here. It's a single disc in a gatefold
cover. How do you tell if it's the retail version?

Also 3 Panther discs (#1/#2/#3), each in a white sleeve, and OS9
install (but that's says 'iBook' on it)

At present the installed OS is 9.2. The web browser is Internet

Let's suppose I can install OS 9.1 from scratch: are there any web
browsers that will work with such an early OS?

    If I install OS 9.1 could I then upgrade it on-line to 10.4.11 ???

I see eBay has several similar machines at prices starting at £50, but
nobody seems to be bidding. Is there actually any use for such an old
    machine?

I'll have a rummage in the shed, I might have one of those (amongst
    other installers if interested).

Sadly not, I have Leopard and Snow Leopard installers (in original
packaging) though, as well as an Aperture 2 installer. If anyone's
interested, I'll gladly pass them on to an old UKRM'er.

I also have original discs of the following.

Windows 98 Second Edition - for a new PC distribution, (loose, no licence) Windows Vista Home Premium (in a plastic case, with licence)
Windows XP Professional - incl. Service Pack 3, (loose, no licence).

I shouldn't get *too* hung up on the OS thing; it's likely that anyone
bidding for it won't be put off by that.

Do you mean locked to the serial number, or locked to the model type?

    model type.

note that the model is not exact, so it might install on a similar mac
if the hardware is close enough, such as a speed bump from a previous
model, which is basically the same hardware, just faster.

it will refuse to install if the computer is an entirely different
model, such as a powermac disc being used with a powerbook or imac.

the check was simple and easily bypassed, however, it did require
copying the install disc, editing a file or two and burning another
    disc.
