Subject: That old EtreCheck question of mine (2018 – ASC)
It's still 'up'!

Just reflecting a bit here, folks —
Back in 2018, I posted a genuine question on Apple’s Support Communities about EtreCheck. I wasn’t trolling or promoting anything, just curious
what it actually did when run. My main questions were:
Does it run scripts in the background — and if so, can we see or stop them? Does it call home to a server?
Is there anything more happening behind the scenes than what’s shown to
the user?
I worded it carefully. Even said, “I’m not trying to be awkward here…” because, well, I wasn’t. But the thread got “cleaned up” shortly after. Posts vanished. I think I touched a nerve.
Looking back, I now realise that EtreCheck’s developer (John Daniel) had close ties to the forum — and the moderators seemed quick to defend
certain sacred cows. Raising transparency questions wasn’t encouraged.
Which is ironic, really. Because if a diagnostic tool runs code and
reports on your system, shouldn’t we be able to ask what it’s actually doing?
Anyway, no harm done — but I’ve come to appreciate communities (like
this one) where curiosity isn’t crushed by clique-ish defensiveness. A reminder that asking fair questions isn’t improper — it’s wise.
