From TimH@21:1/5 to All on Sun Mar 16 19:30:59 2025
Just wondering if anyone is using/has used MailMate? I'm a few days into the 2 week trial, and rather liking it, though config isn't entirely
straightforward; e.g. I haven't managed to bludgeon key bindings into submission yet.

(I'm in one of my semi-regular 'omg Apple's going down the pan' moods, which
    is probably what prompted this.)

I had a little lookie. Nope, not for me. Too expensive, the really
positive reviews don't seem real and the first review I could find
that looked like it might be interesting is jailed behind an
account-wall. If your opinion is so damned important that you have to
wrap a demand for me to make an account to read it then you are
obviously far too important to be read by a lower life-form like me.

Yerp, I realise that the reviewer isn't relevant to the quality or
otherwise of MaiMate but it's still annoying.

But why was I bothering? No one ever emails me. :)

Okay. Here, have a nice hug: {{{HUG}}}.

Slightly better, now? Fine, so what the fuck makes you think Apple
are enshitifying themselves any more today than at any other time in
the previous ten or more years? What *specifically* are they now doing
    wrong or wrongly?

Or is it just one of those feelings of named dread (so much better
than nameless dread which can infect *anything*) that creeps up on
humans every so often like the smell of semolina in a school lunch
room or the endlessly repeated encounters with row after row of
    ready-made sandwiches dripping with mayo?

I wonder, do cats suffer from dread, named or otherwise?

    Off-topic, right?

    Ask a cat.

No, on second thoughts, perhaps that is not a wise suggestion. Cats
are well-known for being self-centred, egotistical, evil little demons
who remember being worshipped as gods.

    They are also deliberately cute.

I've recently moved back to MailMate after spending time with the latest Apple
Mail. Alas, now that Apple have removed the ability to use Mail plugins I was faced with either manually archiving emails into DEVONthink or finding another
email app that could do that for me automagically.

    Pros of MailMate:

    * Integration with lots of other apps.
    * Write emails using Markdown.
    * Smart mailboxes, but on steroids.
    * Mail rules, but on steroids.
    * Fonts and UI can be customised.
    * Fast!
    * Under active development.

    Cons of MailMate:
    * Not free, but reasonably priced.
    * Possibly overkill if you don't have lots of email to process, or a need for the integration with other apps.

Thunderbird does it all as FOSS and it does it on all desktop platforms
    not only mac OS.

Well, if I've understood correctly, you're only required to pay once ($10 for
3 months). If you don't pay after that, it reverts to 'free mode' which is exactly the same as paid, except a header is added saying 'MailMate free mode' - much like MacSoup, IIRC.

Yes, thanks, noticed that. £10 is fine - I read it first time round as a rolling sub, but I see it's an apparently non-visible header and a subtle nag screen. Not ideal but I could live with it.

Mail is OK so far but there are two things that are show-stoppers for me:

    1. Only one profile for each user

    2. Did not find a way to kill format flowed.

I'll add another voice in favour of MailMate too. I agree it's expensive but I
value having a good mail client and even contribute to Benny's ongoing development through a subscription.

My reason for liking it so much was when I first had a Mac in 2003 I used a application from Barebones that was called MailSmith. I liked it for its very simple GUI and powerful rules. When I was looking for an IMAP equivalent MailMate was the closest I could get.

I particularly value that it's a plain text client until one starts typing in markdown and then it switches over to formatted text.

The plugins in the Commands menu are also pretty powerful to turn emails into actionable items or even just for a bit of fun to visualise varying aspects of
    email history.

Thanks Steve. I've made a first subscription payment, so will see how it goes. Lots to like, as you say, though I need to set aside some time to wrangle a
few things to my liking. Nice to know there are some users here anyway!
