A couple of years ago I cobbled together a short video using iMovie 6,
on a Mac Pro which has now died irrevocably. IMovie 6 was brilliantly
simple to use but it won't run on my current Mini.

Yesterday I decided to finish off an article which I am writing for a magazine. I needed a 'still' from a video clip that I had been sent by
a friend, so I downloaded iMovie 10, which is the version recommended
for my most up-to-date machine, which runs OS 10.15.7 (Catalina). I
also thought it would be fun to play about doing some video editing.

I don't know if I am being stupid, but I simply cannot get it to do
anything useful (other than allow me to capture the clip I wanted by
using a screenshot). It insists on playing one clip with the sound from another, I can't get it to do a fade-in from black - there isn't even an option to do this listed in the Help system. It appears to be utterly useless for ordinary work.

Someone has offered to give me an old Mac Mini which may run iMovie 6,
but is there something obvious about iMovie 10 that I am missing or
would the 2GB of disk space be more useful empty?

Did you mean to post the above here?

Yes, but thetext was edited from an e-mail and I forgot to remove some irrelevant lines. Thanks for spotting that.

I know it's a pain, though the effort could be rewarded if this type
of issue arises again later, but could you run a virtual machine with
an older version of the operating system for your iMovie 6?

If you do, you could possibly add other stuff under that OS, too.

I had wondered about that and might consider doing it in future.

This evening I sat down and decided that even if it took several hours,
I would see if I could get some results out of this stupid program.
Eventually I discovered that quite a lot of the functions I needed were
the same as iMovie6 but it had allowed me to somehow lock the clips
together so they ran simultaneously instead of consecutively along the timeline.

Why this should be needed at all - and why it should appear to be the
default behaviour - is completley beyond me.

I'm now getting on with it enough not to feel at a total loss.

Well, should you do so there are loads of YT videos on VM's and how
to abuse them and the virtualising programs all seem to have help
files, Wiki pages and fora where help is available.

You're not one to be beaten by something so simple.

Eventually I discovered that quite a lot of the functions I needed were
    the same as iMovie6 but

Were renamed, put inside different menu trees and changed so some
actions were moved to and aggregated into different sub-functions. In
short, were fiddled with for no good reason but to keep the
programmers and team leaders in a job. :)

it had allowed me to somehow lock the clips
together so they ran simultaneously instead of consecutively along the >timeline.

I don't use iMovie but there's possibly a setting in the Preferences
that has defaulted to something idiotic that Apple thought was
"magic", "innovative" and "will enhance the consumer experience". Deep
diving through the Preferences menus could possibly help. Even if it
isn't there, at least you'll have some more feel for how V 10 differs
    from V6. :)

Oh, and that sort of messing about isn't a complaint against Apple.
*Everyone* does it. Changes for the sake of making something look and
feel newer, shinier or just different are endemic in software
versions. It's not so bad as the "Fashion" industry but they are
    definitely trying to get there.

Why this should be needed at all - and why it should appear to be the >default behaviour - is completley beyond me.

Some team leader (probably recently "promoted" into Marketing and
probably someone who last wrote code in 1976) thought it would be a
marvelous idea. Some dozens of programmers were given the task of
implementing it. Some committee of marketing droids saw "new",
"improved" and "shiny" and no one ever tried the thing on their own
home machines while working on their utterly irreplaceable movies of
Granny and the kittens. No one who could stop the rot.

The guys who make and sell softwares don't seem to ever use them and
certainly don't seem to take advice from users *before* making
grotesque errors. They are too far from our homes to see the havoc
    they sometimes cause.

I'm now getting on with it enough not to feel at a total loss.

Good. You're smart, clever, bright and tenacious. You can do this. I
    have faith in you.

And that was just about the most sincere paragraph of seriousness
that I've typed in decades. :)
