As I was typing my last slrn message using BBEdit to compose it, I was informed of an update to the latter. Even with the free version, it is a vastly
superior text editor than Apple's TextEdit. Emacs is also worth considering as
an alternative to BBEdit.

I use both BBEdit and TextEdit as the occasion requires.

Haven’t seriously used BBEdit since the days of System 7. I used to use TextWrangler for a while of course, but the extortionate cost of it just got too expensive for me to keep up.

One (possibly nerdy) advantage of Emacs, is that includes a built-in
Usenet client, gnus, which I've used for this follow-up.

Reading the replies - it seems this one might be lost to the mists of time now. Ah well.

Unfortunately. Textwrangler started up in less than half the time
BBedit takes.
Cheers - Jaimie (BBedit takes about one second to text window open)
