5*5 came up with 25 for me and there is a little calculator icon at the

Just checked - yes, I do. The behaviour you’re describing is exactly what happened for me prior to this update. Could be coincidence I guess, but Spotlight appears to not be working for any non-search function (eg.
Calculator or conversions), but also not indexing new applications (e.g. it won’t find the new Image Playground, even though I’ve opened it).

    hmm.

Works perfectly here. Spotlight calculates 5*5=25 and the result pops up
in the small digital pocket calculator.

Update done to 15.2 done yesterday night.

With great ease, if my experience is any guide. Back in the Good Old Days things were simpler and theere was a time when I actually understood what was going on "under the hood" of a Mac. But that went out of the window with OSX.

Nowadays I doubt that I actually use, or even know about, more than 10% of the features and facilities available in MacOS, or indeed in any other major piece of software.

My guess is that it misread one of the 45s as 46.

Good call. Looking at it carefully, it’s absolutely clear to a human eye
that the crucial digit is a 5, but I can see how a computer could think it a
    6.

By such errors huge catastrophes arise in the real world.

    my machine's new tricks.

I wonder how I missed this for so long?

With great ease, if my experience is any guide. Back in the Good Old Days >things were simpler and theere was a time when I actually understood what was >going on "under the hood" of a Mac. But that went out of the window with OSX.

Yes, well, back in the past I worked in Unixy shops with the Admin
bunch using Win-PC's and with other stuff scattered about so I deeply
learned those systems. Mac's were restricted to the graphics teams and
Branding and maybe the odd manager - who had a secretary so his
machine having a foreign accent wasn't an issue for him.

I only started using a MacBook in 2007 when I bought the wife one.
She liked it. I got confused a lot as many buttons weren't where they
were "supposed to be" and sis things they weren't supposed to and some
of the names Apple used for stuff were deliberately made obscure to differentiate them from Mickey's Stuff. The wife didn't care. Her MB
was *her* first personal, wholly-owned-by-her machine so she got used
to Apple's little foibles extremely quickly. That it was different
from the house's Windosed machine never bothered her. She was also
    terrifically smart, which helped.

I got to be able to fix *some* issues on her Mac (often with the help
of you folk) but I never did *explore* the thing the way I did on
Windosed boxes. I never had the time. I never took it apart, either,
which I did with other boxes.

So there are probably *millions* of cool tools and tricks that I'll
never find out. Many of which could probably make life a bit simpler,
    easier and more fun.

Nowadays I doubt that I actually use, or even know about, more than 10% of the >features and facilities available in MacOS, or indeed in any other major piece >of software.

Well, I now do the things I do and rarely extend myself outside of
my comfortable shell of limited skills and knowledge, which is one
reason that I found the Finder tricks so damned cool.

I did know that you could do those sorts of things on the Google
search page but I hate using Google so I mostly didn't. My loss. :)

Still, it's nice to know that the Even Older John can learn new
    stuff.

Thanks, everyone and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all.

    Old John.

    Hey! Thank you.

I never knew Spotlight did stuff like those. Now I have even more fun
    toys to play with.

Sorry, but my most up-to-date OS is 15.1.1, I think and your little
toy works fine on that one. Also on 14.3 but I don't suppose anyone
    cares about 14.3 any more?

You may find this facility a bit of an eye-opener, John:-
