What are people using these days to help out distant friends and family with Mac problems? Last time I did this I think it was Teamviewer, but that was a *very* long time ago.

Same here!
I once (and only once) used Screen Sharing -> Network -> + -> AppleID of remote user. The remote user has to accept the request etc. etc. But there are probably better ways now.

Finder menu "Go to"->"Connect to Server"-> "vnc://appleid–of-user"
User has to accept.
I use it quite ofte. It "just works".
(Menuitems translated from my german system, so could be named a bit different in english)
