• Camera SD cards no longer appear as mounted disks

    From D.M. Procida@21:1/5 to All on Sun Aug 4 10:41:20 2024
In Sonoma, a connected camera (that otherwise appears as expected in Photos etc, and as a PTP USB Camera) no longer shows up as mounted disk in Finder,
nor is it visible to Disk Utility.

It seems a funny decision on Apple's part.

Is there any way to mount the SD card via the camera?

I have occasionally come across cameras that wouldn't show up in Finder,
some Canon compacts were one that was common.

However, since owning a digital camera in 2000, as the Macs at the time
did have poor support for things like digital cameras, I have nearly
    always used a card reader.

They could be very OS and camera model specific too. Despite attempts
over the years to standardise such things, it's never been successful.
We still end up with stuff that doesn't always work with certain configurations.

It seems a funny decision on Apple's part.

If that's what it was! Could even be the end of a licensing agreement
between Apple and camera manufacturer (that's a wild guess though).

Unlikely I would think. Unless they do update it (not too likely). If
it's an older camera, it could just have dropped off the 'supported' list.

As I say, I always import from a card using a card reader, for a number
    of reasons.

For one, it's often faster, it's usually much slower downloading from
the camera for some reason (can be painfully slow too).

I also rotate my cards, so I keep the last two or three events stored on
the cards in my bag. I format when I use them again in the rotation.
(and have clearly been imported to Photos, and backed up to other
drives). So it's a part of my process to remove the cards from the
camera anyway (I've always done that).

And, as you found, because of past issues with connecting cameras.

There are dozens of SD card adapters out there (both as a stand-alone
unit, and as part of the myriad of USB hubs out there), although the
Apple ones are quite reasonable, and reliable. Personally I'd just
suggest going with one of those.

    Image capture works for me.

No problems here under Sonoma 14.6. My Pentax K-S1 shows up on the Desktop as always when connected via USB.

No idea about my Nikon D7000, or the couple that preceded it, I've never connected the cameras directly. But I did say 'occasionally', and
'some'. I'm just pointing out that this perhaps isn't an isolated
    problem for the OP.

I assume that the camera's firmware must respond to being interrogated by the computer as to what sort of USB device it is, by indicating that it is a file system (so please mount me) and supplying the necessary responses related to listing the files. That is what happens here and I can drag/drop the image files off the camera and into a folder on a network-shared drive. Which continues to work as previously. And is nice and simple. If this stopped working it would be seriously annoying. Perhaps the OP could identify his connected camera.
