In Sonoma, a connected camera (that otherwise appears as expected in Photos etc, and as a PTP USB Camera) no longer shows up as mounted disk in Finder, nor is it visible to Disk Utility.
I have occasionally come across cameras that wouldn't show up in Finder,
some Canon compacts were one that was common.
However, since owning a digital camera in 2000, as the Macs at the time
did have poor support for things like digital cameras, I have nearly
always used a card reader.
They could be very OS and camera model specific too. Despite attempts
over the years to standardise such things, it's never been successful.
We still end up with stuff that doesn't always work with certain configurations.
It seems a funny decision on Apple's part.
If that's what it was! Could even be the end of a licensing agreement
between Apple and camera manufacturer (that's a wild guess though).
Is there any way to mount the SD card via the camera?
Unlikely I would think. Unless they do update it (not too likely). If
it's an older camera, it could just have dropped off the 'supported' list.
As I say, I always import from a card using a card reader, for a number
of reasons.
For one, it's often faster, it's usually much slower downloading from
the camera for some reason (can be painfully slow too).
I also rotate my cards, so I keep the last two or three events stored on
the cards in my bag. I format when I use them again in the rotation.
(and have clearly been imported to Photos, and backed up to other
drives). So it's a part of my process to remove the cards from the
camera anyway (I've always done that).
And, as you found, because of past issues with connecting cameras.
There are dozens of SD card adapters out there (both as a stand-alone
unit, and as part of the myriad of USB hubs out there), although the
Apple ones are quite reasonable, and reliable. Personally I'd just
suggest going with one of those.
