• Scary message purporting to be from Apple

From Phil Taylor@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jul 19 11:22:28 2024
I won't contaminate this pristine group by posting a picture here, but today I opened my MBP, started up Firefox, and got a full-screen message full of all kinds of warnings. "Your computer has alerted us that it has been infected
with a Trojan Spyware" and "Access to this Apple Device has been blocked for security reasons". Firefox was locked up, and I could not quit.
I was invited to phone Apple (AUS head office).

This clearly did not come from Apple - it was very messy, with messages superimposed on one another, and why would Apple want me to phone their Australian office?

So, I killed Firefox and started up iCab, which worked fine. Went to Mozilla
to download a new Firefox, only to be told that my OS (Mojave) is no longer supported. (I need Mojave, I have several old 32-bit apps, for which there is no modern version)
    Grr.

Went through `/Library, and deleted everything with Firefox in it's name, then restored Firefox.app from time machine. It worked. Now I have to re-create all my bookmarks and preferences.

You attacking EtreCheck 6 years ago has nothing to do with this. In fact, it has nothing to do with anything.

    Get a life.

I saw one of those a few years ago on Edge in Windows. It comes from a compromised web site. I was able to shut it down, clear all the caches/cookies/internet downloads/etc., and everything was fine.
