• Help to decide: iMac/MACMini or Mac Studio?

From Matt@21:1/5 to All on Sun May 19 10:34:17 2024
I have a MacBook Pro 16' 2019, to sell with:
    2.3GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
    RAM: 32GB 2667MHz DDR4
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
    1 TB hard drive
    Running: Sonoma 14.5

And I want to buy a new MAC with a larger display and an Apple chip.

I like the iMAC, because I had a 27-inch from 2015, but the new Imac only offers a maximum of 24 GB of Memory.

I edit some Audio and Video, and using Photoshop latest editions, Logic Pro, etc.

Some people say that with the M3 processor it is not necessary to have as much memory as with the Intel, but I wouldn't want to risk falling short with this.

    What would you recommend?

Thank you very much in advance!

The M series iMacs come with a 24 inch screen so won’t that rule one out?

The rule of thumb is: Double the M3-machine's RAM and you know what it
would necessitate to reach the same performance with an Intel-MB.

The Silicon-Architecture does and can allocate resources dynamically.

The Studios that come up on the refurb store must be good buys as you get a lot of power and ports - there's an M2 Max on now for £1,779:

    Originally released June 2023

Front: Two USB-C ports, one SDXC card slot
Back: Four Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, one 10Gb Ethernet port, one 3.5mm headphone jack

I'd pair it with a 16:10 aspect monitor for some extra vertical pixels but I work a lot with documents but it's overkill for me - I'm looking at replacing my 2018 Mini with a Mini M2 Pro.

    Thanks David!

I have seen refurbished MAC's on the Apple Spain site, but with the configuration that I prefer they are a bit expensive.
Anyway, I will continue looking for this option.

    I know Alan, Thanks!

But although I don't really like the possibility of having everything in a single, very compact cabinet, it would be ideal for me.

Also, I suppose that if the 24' display disappoints me, I could always change for another machine.
I loved the 2015 27-5K iMac that I recently sold, the quality of the display
    is incredible!

But at this moment I am more concerned about the issue of RAM limitation.

The 24 GB are an Intel-equivalent of ca. 48 GB.
Whether that is sufficient, I do not know because I do no video-editing.

    "Tempting"? Really?

For a thousand dollars I would have expected them to throw in a
twenty dollar keyboard and a ten dollar mouse at the very least.

It's a refurbished item, so a refurbished "magic" KB/rat pair
    wouldn't break them.

But it's an Apple supplier so cheapskate profiteering is probably to
    be expected.

Truly, I'm quite surprised that they don't charge an extra $499.99
    for the power cord.

Can you use UKlander, Real-English iMacs? The UK Apple site has lots
to select from but they all look very expensive to me.

    https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/mac/imac

    I rather like this one:

    https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/G19N7B/A/Refurbished-24-inch-iMac-Apple-M3-Chip-with-8-Core-CPU-and-10-Core-GPU-Pink

which has a mouse and KB included but, unfortunately, no internal
    optical drive.

    https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/G171JB/A looks nice, too and
that also does come with a mouse and keys. No monitor, though. Nor
does it seem to have any optical drive but those can be bought for a
few quid and if you're going to buy this monster, an external optical
drive or six isn't much more of an expense.

I think I want one of those.

Though a fully new M3 iMac is only 3,000 if I max-out the options so
perhaps that would be a better choice?

    J.

24GB would almost certainly be OK for me - I have 32GB in the iMac and I've never noticed any swap file use. If the latest adage that new Macs only need half the RAM of old holds true . . .

It's really the screen that concerns me with an iMac, going from 27" to 24". That and the price of upgrading the standard 8GB RAM.

I'm not sure what my decision will be come the time, but I do keep looking at refurb Studios, which land fairly close price wise to a new Mini with similar RAM. Well, not after the cost of a new 27" screen, but a Studio would be nice :-)

My Professor chum has a Studio display. It is superb! The sound is great

Thanks to Alan B, Jörg Lorenz, eastender, David Brooks, John, Chris, RJH, and all of you in this group.

I have been talking to engineering friends in California (I am a retired engineer with 30 years of experience there) and they all agree that it is better to wait a few days when Apple will announce a new line of MACs with a new M4 chip.
The price of the current models will go down, and most likely the new line of iMacs with M4 will be more interesting, probably with bigger displays and
    other improvements.

At the moment Apple Spain has some refurbished MAC Studio at a good price, I was about to buy one, but the problem is the lack of a quality display at a reasonable price, the Apple Studio display costs here € 1,799, and those manufactured by other brands with the same size and resolution are out of
stock and not as good as the Studio.

So I will wait a few days to see what new models are presented and buy some
MAC with M4 or an older model with M2/M3 cheaper.

Thanks again and I'll let you know.
    Matt.

It could be some time before you’ll be able to make a purchase though.
Maybe it’s related to M4 chip availability. There’s still little speculative news about a new M4 iMac with a larger screen.

It's worth keeping an eye on the Apple store and in particular third party retailers who sell Macs. Often Apple discounts the older model to clear
stock just before announcing a new one - when they do so, the old one is nowhere to be seen so you've missed the boat.

The Refurb store can lag on this a bit - I picked up a good deal on a 2012
Mini on the day the 2014 was announced. But the pricing is often not hugely appealing - only slightly better than the new pricing. If you're seeing
good deals now it's possible that a clearance is in progress.
