For some reason my machine had set itself a do not disturb status. After hunting round for how to turn it off, all is now lovely black.

Books has also set reading goals. I've turned that off gods knoe how many times, but it keeps comingback. Sigh.

Thanks for that. It's not something I'd ever have found by poking through the new Settings panel, or even known what it's for. A piss-poor bit of UI, IMO.

    Sounds awful.

Yep. I find myself typing in the search box nearly every time I use Settings.
I don't ever remember needing to do that before.

My Sonoma MBP started going dark when watching videos. After poking
about, I found that the little bugger had set itself to "adjust
    brightness automatically".

*I* didn't do that. I found the setting in "Settings" after a good
routing about. Turning it off sufficed to stop the behaviour.

Well, I think Apple don't *want* us to poke about much. They do seem
to make everything less easy with each OS iteration.

Or maybe that's just me getting lazier?

I'm sure all these things could be useful to someone, but if it's a new
'thing' I'd prefer to choose whether/how I want to use it.

I think Apple delivers all the tools to handle the increasing power and flexibility of macOS.

It is a fact that *we* get older and more unflexible every day.

If we are honest to ourselves: *Never teach an old dog new tricks*! or *PEBKAC*.

Enjoy macOS 14! It can do incredible things!
