I seem to remember having to pour boiling water into a plastic container full
    of dried noodles!

That still happens but it is only one variety in a near infinite sea.
Those are "pot noodles" or "cup noodles" depending on the country of
origin. Some of them are evil but a few are really good.

They take up a lot of space, so aren't really a good idea for a small
camper van or backpacking. The packet variety are much more compact and
you can store several of them in a mess tin.

There are also packets of noodley things, some wheat, some rice, some
other plants, mostly grasses of some kind, that you open to pour into
a bowl then drown in steamy water. Those can have lots of things added
    to make them even nicer.

I like to add soy sauce, Encanos hot sauce, maybe some ploughman's
pickle on top and perhaps a pile of pickled red cabbage and a couple
of hot pickled onions. I sometimes, for added minerals, add salt,
peppers, both powder and live bits of veggies chopped up, and a
variety of curry powder like stuff.

    But I'm slightly weird.

I am severely mustard-allergic, so I have to check everything rigorously
for any mustard-like ingredient. It used to be quite limiting in my
choice of food because mustard turned up everywhere. Nowadays the manufacturers are beginning to realise it is an expensive ingredient
which reduces their potential customer base, so they leave it out or
    substitute black pepper.
