• PayPal playing silly B***ers?

From Liz Tuddenham@21:1/5 to All on Fri May 3 17:51:28 2024
Last week I received an e-mail, followed by a 'phone call, from an upset customer demanding an explanation for why I had taken his money and not
sent his order. He gave me the dates on which he placed the order and
when the money had gone out of his account.

I checked all my e-mail archives and spam bin and found that I handn't
received any e-mails from PayPal around that period -- in fact I hadn't received any for quite a long time.

Luckily the customer lived nearby, so I delivered his goods by hand,
explained what had happened and enclosed a complete refund to compensate
him for the trouble he had experienced. He seemed well placated, but I
can't help wondering how many other customers I may have lost and what a situation like this will do for my reputation if it is allowed to
    continue.

It may be that I am doing PayPal an injustice and they did send an
e-mail but it was blocked by Plusnet or some other agency. Trying to
find out is nearly impossible but I have come across reports that
something similar by PayPal disrupted 90 businesses not long ago.

To overcome this I have inserted an extra webpage in the ordering
process, which takes the customer's contact details and passes them on
to me by e-mail before connecting to PayPal - but this means the
customer having to put in the same information twice.

Does anyone know if there is a way of preloading the PayPal system with customer data from an "_xclick" input?

It might be safer not to use PayPal.

If a supplier asks me to use it I generally don't buy from them.

I would love to use a different payment system and only used PayPal
because a huge increase in Worldpay prices put my previous supplier out
of business. (The software is still in my system so I can revert to
    Worldpay if circumstances change.)

Do you have any recommendations for a very small business which hardly
    sells anything nowadays?

Get your customers to send cheques in the post.

Sadly I don't think it's possible for a small business to operate these
days. You have to be big enough to operate your own merchant account,
and have a modern computer kept fully up-to-date. But we've been there
    before!

Electronic fund transfers are how I do almost everything and have
done for most if not all of this Millennium.

If you set up a form on your website, the customers don't actually
need to know your account details nor does the web-page, it can all be
    done in scripts.

    I think.

I'm not sure whether EFTing money around gives you any confirmation
flags that you can email to yourself and your customers but perhaps
    your bank manager would know?

The advantage to doing it straight into your own accounts is that you
don't pay 85% of all transactions to PayPal or whatever their cut is.

And now is when everyone yells that I'm an idiot and such things
don't work in your country. :)

FAO Liz - can read John's post OK in MacSOUP and have followed up to it
using MacSOUP. Can you read all this post including quoted text?

Cannot read it here with SeaMonkey either.

Could it be the encoding John’s client is using then and which has incompatibility issues with some other clients especially if older versions
are being used. John appears to be using Agent when I looked at his

OK - this was what was in John's post which showed up just fine here using Usenapp. Maybe all you chaps and chappesses should move to something more recent:

Could you set up a business account that you can electronically
    transfer customers' funds into?

Yes. Thanks to all who translated it for me.

I think my business is so small, with only the occasional sale, that it
isn't worth changing. I reached official retirement age more than 10
years ago and have been running the business down ever since - but a few customers just won't go away. (The CD sales are only a 'shop' front'
for the much more interesting jobs that come my way.)

I have re-written the PHP scripts that send the customer to PayPal and
they now alert me by e-mail so that I can check with PayPal that the
payment has gone through and I have the customer's address in a
convenient format for Copying and Pasting onto the postal label. Thanks
to Bruce Horrocks I can now pre-populate the PayPal request with the
data the customer has already given me.

I am now waiting for a customer to try it out.

Meanwhile I have discovered that I can't get into my PayPal account
using the Mac Book - and both my spare MacPros have blown up their power supplies. I think it is time I started looking at the secondhand market
for another Mac but I'll post that in a separte thread after the
    weekend.

It's probably to do with Agent's Tools -> Options -> Languages

MIME headers box unticked but I'm no expert.

Somebody over on uk.d-i-y was having the same problem with Thunderbird generating base64 when there's a UTF8 character in the message. But if I decode the base64 and hexdump it I'm not seeing anything other than 7-bit characters. So I don't understand why it's been encoded.

What? What in the name of all things silicon is *that* doing there?
The post looked okay to me when I archived it.

Ok, so I recognise the format, it's what Usenet sends when you post a
binary, such as a picture to a "pictures.scenic" newsgroup or
something but I've never, ever, *ever* seen it in one of my text-only
messages and I don't do binaries any longer.

    Sorry, apologies and oops.

Anyway, the message I sent wasn't worth bothering with. All I asked
was whether you could set up a script to send monies into your
personal bank accounts rather than have people pay PayPal.

You answered that peripherally in response to others so I'm sorry for bothering you.

Please tell me whether this works? Thanks.

    Take care, :)

I can read it fine in my MacSOUP. Why is it base64 encoded?

It's probably to do with Agent's Tools -> Options -> Languages
settings. I believe Usenet Text should be set to 7bit/8bit with the
MIME headers box unticked but I'm no expert.

Okay, so I made sure of those. Better? Worse? Still broken? Honestly,
this has never happened to me before. :)

    Fullly readable now. Thanks.

Good. Virtual hugs for wasting your time and efforts.

I'm off to do something, maybe have a cup of tea or a noodley thingy.

Re: MacSOUP, Stefan must have made a change to allow it to render Base64. Version 2.8.5 can still be downloaded but I managed to obtain 2.8.6b1 via a fellow uscm-er and have had no problems.

Actually dried packet noodles with a sachet of flavouring powder are a
really good 'emergency food' that I carry in my van. They have a very
long sell-by date and, if the cooking arrangements* break down, they can
be eaten uncooked and dry by breaking off bits and dipping them into the flavouring powder.

I'm still using version 2.4.6 on a Beige G3 running OS 8.6, so I doubt
if I could upgrade any higher.

Nor has my sister. She's got a *thing* about wheat or bamboo or some
    other grass-like organism. It's gluten-connected.

Me, I eat about one pot-noodle sized noodley object per week or so. I
usually add soy sauce, Encano hot sauce and maybe more mango chutney
as the manufacturers are shrinking the tiny drops that they include
inside the "flavour-packets". Those used to be full and plumb with, in
the case of soy sauce, very strong, dark juice. Today, you're lucky if
you get three drips of pallid, weak watery liquid.

    Which is *WAY* OT.

    Sorry.

    I'm going away, now. :)

That still happens but it is only one variety in a near infinite sea.
Those are "pot noodles" or "cup noodles" depending on the country of
origin. Some of them are evil but a few are really good.

There are also packets of noodley things, some wheat, some rice, some
other plants, mostly grasses of some kind, that you open to pour into
a bowl then drown in steamy water. Those can have lots of things added
    to make them even nicer.

I like to add soy sauce, Encanos hot sauce, maybe some ploughman's
pickle on top and perhaps a pile of pickled red cabbage and a couple
of hot pickled onions. I sometimes, for added minerals, add salt,
peppers, both powder and live bits of veggies chopped up, and a
variety of curry powder like stuff.

    But I'm slightly weird.

My apologies for annoying everyone. It wasn't intentional. I've been Usenetting forever and never had that issue. :(

Talking of old ancient Mac apps, no problem when using MT NewsWatcher
    running on SheepShaver OS 9.1.
