  • Migration Assistant

    Hi just contemplating (i.e. been tempted by...) a new MacBook

    I am familiar with replacing iphones & ipads - the icloud backup & restore to new device works like a charm.

    Does anyone have experience with Migration Assistant? Would it be as painless as for the phones & tablets (I realise it's a completely different MO). Will everything be copied or are there gotchas of which the user needs to be aware?

    I use it all the time at work when moving users to new machines. User names
    and passwords don't carry over, but that's the only gotcha I can think of.

    No particular problems here other than it taking ages (as expected). You
    need to be careful if you’ve already setup a user on the new Mac - it’s explained in the process doc you quoted.

    It is even more simple. Keep the new and the old Mac close to each other
    and have the medium with the profiles/accounts (time machine) ready. The
    rest will be explained to you. Depending on the quantity of data it will
    take between 15 minutes and let's say 2 h of which all the time is
    basically used to transfer the user-data.

    yes they do.

    Mine certainly carried over when I had to restore (don’t ask!) my MBA a few weeks ago.

    User names and passwords are part of a profile (and the keyring) and
    they are moved over.

    they always carry over, unless specifically de-selected prior to
    migration.

    Then it was your decision during the set-up-process. You must have
    deslected a few things in the migration assistant.
