  • OT'ish: iPad - am I right no way to show 3 or 4 apps in split view?

    Am I right in thinking you can’t put three or even four apps on an iPad
    such that they’re all simultaneously visible? I can see you can do three in Split View, but one seems to be in this side over mode rather than actually present.

    Use case: one main Citrix window taking up majority of space, two messaging apps to the side (Messages and WhatsApp). Bonus 4th if we can throw Discord
    in there, but I accept we’re talking about the limits of readable space there.

    Very much on fence about an iPad right now, but I just had a play in a store and wasn’t quite convinced. I also played with Stage Manager and that
    -kind- of did it but again, not so everything is visible same time. I believe you can do it on an external monitor, but then...what would I have bought the iPad for? I can already do that with this Mac.

    Yup, that's it.

    Whst you have is a use case that requires more screen space than a
    single iPad will afford, if you want all those apps visible. They are
    just a swipe sideways on the bottom-of-the-screen indicator bar away.

    Having three messaging apps live seems a bit overkill. You only have two
    eyes and one keyboard.

    Hah - I’m regularly running three on the Mac. Messages, WhatsApp and
    Discord. Throw in when working also running WebEx and occasionally Teams,

    Yeah. The “Citrix + 2 messaging apps” -is- the cut-down for me. When working in laptop mode (i.e. no external monitor) I tend to have Citrix
    taking most of the screen, then Messages and WhatsApp over on the right. Discord not a chance admittedly.

    I’m actually also considering replacing the LG 5k with a 49” ultra wide because of the way I work, but I’m really nervous about the drop in ppl so haven’t done so as yet. For iPadland that’s obviously ridiculous, but one of the reasons for wanting the iPad is to double it up as an external monitor for me in just laptop mode - in -that- use case, I’d have Messages and WhatsApp in halves on the iPad, while running Citrix majority of main laptop screen. I just was also hoping it would be useful independently, but it seems for my use pattern it’s just not quite there yet.

    Regularly. Should probably mention at this point I work in an environment
    where 6 screens is the norm.

    I have people trying to contact me using various different messaging apps. I also often am on video calls whilst simultaneously watching four to six incoming messaging apps and looking at things on a main presentation. This is normal for me in work usage. Three of those, however, would reside within the Citrix window I’m talking about.
    For the tablet I’m not looking to fully replicate all that, at least not
    when it’s in tablet form. But I don’t think three is much to ask - Citrix
    + upper-right quadrant for Messages and lower-right for WhatsApp. A 12.9”
    is bigger than the 12” MacBook I used for years, and ran the same
    arrangement on.
