  • Compressor vs. Handbrake

    Hi:

    Is there any reason to use Compressor rather than Handbrake? Or, to put it another way, why is Compressor so bad?

    Handbrake, it seems to me, compresses files far more efficiently, far faster than Compressor, and I wonder if there's some technology that Apple aren't allowed to use for some reason.

    (Of course, Compressor has the ability to harness other computers on the network, but having tried this in the past it's so flaky that it's not worth using.)

    That’s exactly it. Bit of a relic these days really as unless you’re
    doing drastic stuff with 8k or what have you, modern desktops or laptops will be fine. Hell, even this now apparently ancient and decrepit Mac Intel i9
    would do the trick.

    The VideoToolbox/H265 video encoder settings in Handbrake seem to make pretty good use of the i5 processor in my recent iMac - typically shrinking a 1 hour iPlayer file in about 7 minutes.

    To make .MOVs, ProRes versions and proxies.

    It's useful when files need cropping and/or padding for output - probably because I'm used to setting it up in Compressor

    Watch folders

    Handbrake certainly maxes out my old iMac Pro, so I mix and match between it, Compressor and EditReady.

    Handbrake worked for me. I'll have to go and look at Compressor as UCSM has gone quiet...
