Probably. On the Mac you have to use the AUSampler Audio Unit.

Thanks, but that's about loading a sample from a file. It's the only way I
know of doing it on macOS GarageBand - I would like to be able to record samples for immediate playback, the way one can in the iOS version.
I did find a plugin that could do it - TX16Wx - but my God that was a
business, and it crashed anyway.
