My 18-year-old PC has suffered a PSU failure. I need a new 200W AT
form factor PSU (not ATX).
Does anybody know of a source for refurbished/2nd-hand AT form factor
PSUs?
That's no going to be easy - either the cost will be high or you'll
have no guarantee that the replacement isn't much better than your old
one. It might even be worth trying to fix the dead one. Did it go
bang or just fail to start?
It just failed to start. Even the fan won't rotate. No humming, no noise whatsoever.
No sign of life at all.
That could be something as simple as a corroded start switch on the case
of the PC. Try momentarily shorting the (power on) pins at the motherboard.
You could also do the old paperclip power supply test but I forget the
two pins you short on the power cable. The power supply should power on
with out being attached to the motherboard with the correct jumper on
the 20/24 pin connector.
Plus I have seen some motherboards that will show the same results as
yours if the motherboard battery is totally dead.
I suspected the motherboard battery and replaced it with a brand new one.
I shall try the paperclip test, etc. as suggested.
The motherboard has dual power, AT and ATX (20-pin) and luckily I have an old ATX PSU.
I have tried the ATX PSU and although power is supplied and I can hear the hard disks whirring and
can open the CD tray, nothing appears on the attached monitor screen. I have also replaced the VGA
card with a new one but still there are no startup messages on the screen. I am wondering if this is
a sign that when the original AT PSU blew it also did some damage to the motherboard, in which case
the whole system is junk.
