  • old mainboards dying

    I needed to use an old SCSI adapter, which only worked in really old
    RHEL (as they dropped the driver in newer versions). So went to junk
    cupboard, had 3 Nehalem boards. The first one is stuck in a boot loop,
    fans going on and off.
    Next one doesn't boot if RAM plugged in (no beep, no keyboard lights),
    but gives beep code for bad RAM with no RAM. So the last one, fingers
    crossed, it works (with a new CMOS battery)!

    Power caps dried out I'd guess. Those boards ran hot and it's been ~15
    years.

    Just plain busted :) Probably also caps, not enough power available to stabilise the bus.

    So the last one, fingers
    crossed, it works (with a new CMOS battery)!

    Hurray! Get the job done quickly before the caps dry out.
