  • Reinstalling Windows on old computers - small tip

    I'm battling with a clean install of W10 on an old Dell XPS13.
    So old I'm not sure what OS it started with.
    Anyway.

    If you find loads of unknown devices in Device Manager, and Dell insists
    that all your drivers are up to date, but you suspect Intel and Realtek
    drivers (for example) are missing.

    Look at Windows Update because included in Additional Options is a list of Drivers.

    So far I have fixed all but one of the Unknown Devices and I have an audio controller at last.

    I thought I was going to have to plough trough an archive list of drivers trying to find the right one, but this seems (for once) to be very useful.

    I have no idea why Dell/Intel/Windows can't just check the Unknown Devices
    and try to fix them.
    There was an obvious awareness of a Realtek device, for example.

    Just thought I'd share in case anyone else hits a similar problem.

    Amen to that, in my case the Intel Management Engine and ACPI drivers
    being the main culprits - ironically I just checked the name in Device
    Mangler and I have a yellow blob on an ACPI driver on my new build.

    Yes but why? Why doesn't whatever process they use find them, in my case
    it's usually Intel drivers so it really ought to be able to find them/
