I was also looking at the ex-enterprise disks, for example:

Worth the saving?
I wouldn't feel too bad about using used discs in a RAID, since if one goes the others still have the data. The main thing to consider with enterprise drives is they can be more power hungry and noisier. Although possibly the difference against consumer drives is not too significant - look up the specs. They are perhaps a bit more robustly built than consumer drives so I'd hope they last a bit longer.
All done, got a couple of Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB, £210 delivered the pair.
So far so good - impressed by the specs at least - 2 million hours MTBF(!) and a 5 year guarantee (manufacture date Dec 2019, although it wouldn't surprise
me if the warranty doesn't apply). And everything's working very snappily.
The only slight thing is the noise - I can /just/ hear them in the room above the cellar where they're kept. Maybe once the've finished indexing it might quieten down a bit.
Couple of 3TB disks going spare (£80 delivered for both, one Seagate Ironsomething, 1 Toshiba consumer) if anyone's interested.
