One thing I look at for an explanation of consciousness is the Sanskrit
symbol Om. Sanskrit is from the ancient language of India.

1) The dot on top is divine collective consciousness. It is called Turiya.

2) The three connected lines on the bottom are dreaming, waking and
sleeping consciousness. In order, these are called: Swapna, Jagrat, and Sushupti.

3) The curled line separating (1) and (2) is illusion. This is called Maya.

4) Rising above illusion to divine collective consciousness is called moksha/nirvana. Finding good karma.

5) Before rising is called samsara/dukkha. Bad karma.
