ST. LOUIS Five people, including three teenagers, were hurt in what
police are now investigating as a mass shooting that they say started as a rolling gun battle Thursday evening in the Tower Grove South neighborhood.

St. Louis police said it started around 7 p.m. in the parking lot of NAT
Motor on the 3700 block of Morgan Ford Road, when a group of five men
opened fire on each other in the residential area, while children played
    just steps away.

"I'm just like, why are we out here shooting? There are children out here playing," said a witness Emma Fleming.

Dozens of evidence markers filled the parking lot. Detectives zoned in on
a black Mercedes that police said the group was driving, which had been
stolen during a carjacking on July 11.

Police said the men were being "very uncooperative" with investigators and
had given little information, claiming they didnt know who shot them or
    why.

However, surveillance video reviewed by investigators showed all five
suspects exchanging gunfire and shooting at each other.

One nearby resident, who asked not to be identified, told 5 On Your Side
shes now afraid even to leave her home.

"That's six houses away from me. It's too close to home. Youre afraid to
come out of your house. Youre afraid to go anywhere," she said.

    Investigators said all five mena 23-year-old, a 19-year-old, a 24-year-
old, and two 17-year-oldsgot into a rolling gun battle, firing off round
    after round.

"I want to know what's going on. I mean, I have a right to know what's
going on. I live in the doggone neighborhood," said the neighbor. "Was the argument or whatever you were fighting over, was it worth it? There are
other ways to handle things than a gun battle."

They later arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds. Police described their conditions as non-life-threatening but gave no further information.

One witness, Emma Fleming, said she watched in disbelief from across the
street as shots rang out near families and children playing outside.

"I look outside my window and I saw one guy on the ground, he was kneeling
down on the ground with a gun, shooting down towards the street, because
he was over there by the tire area. He had one of those black ski masks
on. And then he ran down the street, back behind the school and church
area. The other guy ran out from under my apartment and ran to Johnny's
Food Mart. And I just heard kids screaming. There were parents out there,
and then I saw them like all the cops' cars come," said Fleming.

Fleming said shes lived in the neighborhood for two years, but this
shooting has pushed her closer to moving.

Even though its right by Tower Grove Park, it just doesnt feel very
    safe right here, Fleming said.

Police said theyre not looking for additional suspects, because
surveillance footage confirms the five men shot at each other. The motive remains unclear.

    "I don't understand what's with these young kids. When I was a kid, I'd
sit on my front porch and play with my Barbie doll. Nowadays, they want to
go out with a gun and shoot," said the neighbor.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Maj. Janice Bockstruck called the shooting incredibly brazen.

This is a neighborhood. This is where people live and thats not what we
need or want. Were here to help curb that activity," said Bockstruck.

Police also seized a second vehicle that was used to bring some of the men
to the hospital and are investigating it.

As of Friday evening, police have not stated if the five men were in
    custody.

Anyone with information is urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477) or a detective directly at 314-444-0100. Tipsters who go through CrimeStoppers and help lead to a felony arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
