CHICAGO � Gov. JB Pritzker warned the state cannot fill cuts to the
United States� signature food assistance program under the �Big
Beautiful Bill� that President Donald Trump has signed into law.
Changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also
known as SNAP and once known as food stamps, will slash benefits
for more than 360,000 low-income residents across Illinois,
Pritzker�s office said Monday.
Trump�s massive tax and spending bill � which he signed Friday
after it narrowly passed through Congress � shifts some of the
financial burden of the federal food assistance program to the
states and threatens further assistance cuts if states can�t meet
the financial obligation, according to Pritzker�s office.
The new law also requires people under 64 years old receiving SNAP
benefits to prove they�re working 20 hours a week. That raises the
working age from 54 while making exceptions for parents with
children younger than 14.
Those now at risk of losing work exemptions in Illinois include
23,000 unhoused people, veterans and youth who have aged out of
foster care, according to Pritzker�s office.
In addition to cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, the legislation also
includes tens of billions of dollars for border wall construction
and immigration enforcement operations. The bill extends tax cuts
to the wealthiest Americans and potentially adds trillions to the
national debt over the next decade.
�SNAP has been a crucial federal resource for families trying to
put food on the table for more than 60 years, but Trump and
Republicans would rather children go hungry so their friends can
receive tax cuts,� Pritzker said in the statement.
