CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A 29-year-old Cleveland man who pleaded guilty
to raping a woman at Edgewater Park in December 2019 was scheduled to be sentenced by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Kevin Kelley
Thursday; however, at the hearing, he fired his attorney.
Judge Kelley said this was Ambus Shephard’s third attorney.
On May 3, Shephard pleaded guilty to rape and felonious assault.
In court on Thursday, Shephard also said once he retains a new attorney,
he wants to withdraw the guilty plea.
“I’m going to grant the motion to withdraw and we will appoint new
counsel then we will try to do this as quickly as we can out of respect
for the victims who have been waiting for a long time,” Judge Kelley
said.

Cleveland police said on Dec. 29, 2019, Shephard approached the
24-year-old victim, sexually assaulted her and then fled the scene.
A Good Samaritan found the victim and called police.
EMS transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for her
injuries.
Police arrested Shephard on Jan. 3, 2020.
There is no new hearing date for Shepard.
Cuyahoga County prosecutors said Shephard is also facing charges in an unrelated sexual assault case.
