WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Video obtained by News 8 captured the chaotic
scene after five people were shot Tuesday afternoon inside the Brass
Mill Center mall in Waterbury.
Watch it in the video above.
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said the shooting stemmed from
a dispute between two men around 4:45 p.m.
The suspected shooter, identified by police as 19-year-old Tajuan
Washington of Waterbury, shot the other man and four women.
Three of the five people who were shot have been released from the
hospital, according to the city’s mayor. Police said all of the victims ranged in age between 18 and mid-20s.
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said Washington was arrested
and charged with five counts of first-degree assault and several weapons violations. He was arraigned Wednesday and held on a $2 million bond.
“We do not believe this was a random act of violence,” the police chief said. “We believe this started as a conflict and escalated.”
Using forensic technology, police tracked down the suspected shooter at
his home, where they found two rifles inside. Spagnolo said they have
still not found the weapon, a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, that
was used in the mass shooting.
The mall remains closed.
