WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Three of the five people who were shot Tuesday afternoon at the Brass Mill Center mall in Waterbury have been released
from the hospital, according to the city’s mayor.
Police said all of the victims — four women and one man ranging in ages
from 20 to 26 — were treated at hospitals for non-life-threatening
injuries.
On Wednesday, Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski said three of the victims
had been released from the hospital, and the other two remain
hospitalized in stable condition.
Pernerewski said the most serious injury was to a “young lady” who
suffered a gunshot to the spine. The mayor said she has regained some
feeling in her extremities and will undergo rehab.
“Hopefully, she will not find herself paralyzed,” Pernerewsksi said. “We’ll see how that develops.”
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said Tajuan Washington, 19, of Waterbury, turned himself in to police late Tuesday evening. He was
charged with five counts of first-degree assault, risk of injury to a
child, criminal use of a weapon, illegal discharge of a firearm,
first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit
and illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle.
He was arraigned Wednesday and held on a $2 million bond.
“We do not believe this was a random act of violence,” the police chief said. “We believe this started as a conflict and escalated.”
The mall remains closed.
U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, (D) Connecticut, 5th District, said that Grace
Baptist Church will hold a prayer service for the community at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
