(Bloomberg) -- Federal immigration agents working with state and local authorities arrested 1,120 people across Florida last week in what
officials called the largest coordinated immigration enforcement operation
ever conducted in the state.
About 63% of those arrested during the six-day Operation Tidal Wave had existing criminal charges or convictions, according to a statement from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Most were from Guatemala, Mexico,
Honduras and Venezuela.
ICE said the operation targeted members of gangs including MS-13 and Tren
de Aragua, groups the Trump administration has labeled terrorist
organizations. The agency didnt immediately respond to a request for a complete list of those arrested, pending criminal charges or prior
convictions.
Such raids have raised concerns from civil-rights advocates and
immigration lawyers who have questioned whether those targeted are being afforded the right to due process. Those captured in the Florida raids
with final deportation orders or prior removals face immediate removal,
while others remain in custody awaiting hearings or travel arrangements
for removal, according to ICE.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican ally of President Donald
Trump, said the arrests included 378 people with final deportation orders. DeSantis signed a package of laws this year expanding state cooperation
with ICE and backing laws that tighten immigration enforcement.
Last weeks operation was a collaborative whole-of-government effort by
our federal, state and local law enforcement partners in Florida, ICE
Deputy Director Madison Sheahan said in a statement.
Florida leads the nation in agencies enrolled in ICEs 287(g) program,
which allows state and local officers to make immigration arrests. That includes partnerships with the National Guard, Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission and even the Department of Lottery Services.
The Department of Homeland Security has said the agency has now made 579 enforcement agreements with state and local authorities across the
country.
Trump campaigned on a promise to carry out the largest deportation effort
in US history. Since January, ICE has made 66,000 arrests and deported
roughly 65,600 people, according to ICE.
