PORTLAND, Ore. — Newly released data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows Oregon students continue to lag behind the
rest of the country in math and reading.

It's been a consistent problem since the pandemic, when many Oregon
students learned remotely until spring 2021. That was far longer than
    other students across the country.

Oregon fourth graders score third worst nationally in math. They are
tied for the fourth-worst score in reading. Those students were just
beginning their schooling when classrooms shuttered due to the pandemic.

Oregon eighth graders are faring better than the elementary schoolers,
but assessment scores are still low. Those middle schoolers rank below
national averages in math and reading.

    making few gains in math

Educators and lawmakers have been keeping a close eye on low test scores
    for more than a year.

"Our numbers are not where they need to be; the fact that our reading
and writing numbers are so low and some, in some cases, worse than pre-pandemic, (is) unacceptable," said Gov. Tina Kotek at a press
    conference in October.

Since the pandemic, scores have worsened statewide. While that's not surprising, Oregon students have been slower to recover from learning
loss than other students across the country.

In a statement, Dr. Charlene Williams, the director of Oregon's
Department of Education (ODE) said, in part, "these results further
underscore the critical need to strengthen core instructional practices
across our entire PreK-12 system, while also focusing on students who
    urgently need targeted support."

Williams added the ODE is expanding literacy efforts and summer learning opportunities to close learning gaps and accelerate learning.
