Cops who detain and possibly arrest you can not compel you to show them ID. That's because there is no requirement to carry ID when going about your business. There are some situations in which you need to show ID in order to accomplish some particular thing, such as board an airplane, enter a federal courthouse, pay for an in-person purchase by check, etc., but if you don't intend or need to do any of those things, you don't have to carry any ID.

In states that have fascist stop-and-identify laws, you must identify yourself to a cop who detains you, but you can meet that requirement by orally stating your name when asked. Don't lie, because lying to a cop is a separate offense. In civilized states that don't have fascist stop-and-identify laws, you must identify yourself if arrested.

In *no* states can cops stop you and demand that you identify yourself just based on a "hunch" or because you "look suspicious" or they think you look like you "might be" an undocumented immigrant. In order to stop and detain you, cops have to have a *reasonable* and *articulable* suspicion that you are involved as
a participant in a crime that has occurred, is occurring or is about to occur. Absent a *reasonable* and *articulable* suspicion of your criminal involvement, the stop is unconstitutional and illegal.

That's okay, law enforcement bullets don't discriminate if you do or
    don't have an ID.

They don't care if you are a pole smoker or transgender either.

I have no problem with DUI checkpoints or manhunt nets.

DUI checkpoints have to be sufficiently announced that drivers
    can avoid them.

We have agriculture check stations, but they are easy to avoid
    and minimally intrusive.

I have my id, my insurance and tag are current, thanks officer, have a
    good night.

Driving is a privilege, so some minor restrictions are allowed.
People not driving do not have to produce identification.

Courts do allow some encroachment on rights when there is
    overriding need of society.

Only two groups have a problem with providing ID on request:

    1. Those who don't have what is needed.
    2. Smart asses who are only interested in causing trouble.
